The Kansas Public Employee Retirement System (KPERS) has been a major topic of discussion for the last several years. As your State Treasurer, I am a member of the KPERS Board. The Board has a fiduciary responsibility to manage the assets for the benefits of the members, and not to make positions on the legal structure. But as State Treasurer (and a Tier 1 KPERS member), I encourage the Legislature and the Governor to pass some necessary changes this year.

TOPEKA, Kan. — Kansas State Treasurer Ron Estes presented eighth grade Westridge Middle School student Bryan Ralphs with an award of  $1,000 towards a Learning Quest 529 Education Savings Program account on November 16. He was one of four statewide winners of the 10th annual Learning Quest® Essay Contest.

TOPEKA, Kan. — The importance of financial education to Kansas students cannot be overemphasized, especially as we continue to struggle with a weak economy.  Kansas State Treasurer Ron Estes’ office will continue partnership with the South Central Chapter of the Kansas Credit Union Association on Thursday, October 13, to train middle school students at Truesdell Middle School, 2464 S Glenn Ave., Wichita, KS,  in dollars and sense during the day-long Money$mart Financial Management Camp.

Kansas State Treasurer Ron Estes announced today that the Treasurer's Office Unclaimed Property Division recently returned the single largest property in state history, returning $516,000 to a Kansan.

Lawrence – State Treasurer Ron Estes returned over $4,000 in unclaimed property to Haskell Indian Nations University (HINU) located in Lawrence. During the recent legislative session, two Haskell students interning for State Representative Ponka-We Victors of Wichita helped discover the money during a tour of the State Treasurer's office.

Topeka – Fulfilling one of his major legislative priorities, the Kansas Legislature passed State Treasurer Ron Estes' plan to prevent elected officials from appearing in advertisements or public service announcements during election season. The bill now heads to Governor Sam Brownback for action.

Topeka – Treasurer Ron Estes announced U.S. Bank N.A. has been awarded the contract for banking services for the State of Kansas. The state's purchasing process involved staff from the Treasurer's Office, the Division of Accounts and Reports and the Division of Purchases and gave banks across the state the opportunity to compete for this contract. After a thorough review the decision was made that U.S. Bank provided the best service at a significant cost savings to the State. A combination of new features and technological capabilities will make the state more efficient in the way services are provided to Kansans.

Topeka – With a focus on investment performance while attempting to reduce investor risk, Kansas State Treasurer Ron Estes today announced an 11 member Learning Quest 529 Treasurer's Advisory Committee (529 TAC). The committee meets at the request of the Chairperson or Treasurer and members serve at the pleasure of the Treasurer without compensation. The committee will review and make non-binding recommendations to the Kansas State Treasurer on ways to enhance the 529 plan for the benefit of account owners, beneficiaries, and the citizens of Kansas.

Topeka – Senate Bill 126 preventing elected officials from appearing in, having their photo, or their name appear in an advertisement or public service announcement 60 days prior to a primary or general election when their name appears on the ballot took a step closer to becoming state law today.

Topeka – State Treasurer Ron Estes gave a presentation today to the students at Farley Elementary in Topeka to kick off the "Save @ School" program which teaches children about the benefits of saving by allowing them to open a savings account. Many people grow up without ever learning the fundamentals of money management. In an effort to help Kansas children understand the value of saving money State Treasurer Estes is sponsoring the "Save @ School" program to help teach financial education.

Topeka – State Treasurer Ron Estes today applauded the work of the Kansas House Elections Committee and Senate Ethics and Elections Committees on the passing of HB 2157 and SB 126 for the full consideration of their respective bodies. Treasurer Estes testified in support of these limits in front of the committees this past week.

Topeka – Ron Estes was sworn in today as the 39th Treasurer of the state of Kansas. Kansas Supreme Court Chief Justice Lawton R. Nuss administered the oath in the chambers of Kansas House of Representatives in the State Capitol.
